General Women’s Health
Specialist Osteopathic care supporting women’s health through the changes, challenges and transitions of life
Women’s bodies go through a lot of change — and sometimes the effects can continue to have an impact long after the original event.
At Ashby Osteopaths, our women’s health specialist osteopaths provide individualised care for a range of women’s health concerns, from postnatal recovery and scar tissue to pelvic floor symptoms and changes following pregnancy loss.
We take the time to understand what you are experiencing, how it is affecting you and what you would like help with. Your treatment will be tailored to you, your body and your circumstances.
How can we help?
Women’s health osteopathy may be appropriate for a range of concerns, including:
- Postnatal recovery, including longer-term changes after having a baby
- Pelvic floor concerns, such as feelings of heaviness, pressure or tension
- Scar tissue, including caesarean section, episiotomy or other pelvic and abdominal scars
- Abdominal or pelvic discomfort
- Changes following pregnancy loss or miscarriage
- Pelvic, hip or lower back discomfort associated with pregnancy or childbirth
- Tension or discomfort around the pelvis
- Pain or restriction associated with scar tissue
- Changes in how your body feels or moves following childbirth
- Support alongside your recovery from other women’s health conditions or procedures
- Scar therapy for any surgical recovery from caesarian to mastectomy
You don’t need to have a specific diagnosis to make an appointment. If something doesn’t feel quite right, we can assess what may be contributing to your symptoms and discuss appropriate options with you.
Your assessment
Your first appointment will begin with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history and what you would like help with.
We may assess your posture, movement, breathing, abdomen, pelvis, hips and lower back, as appropriate.
Internal assessment
For some pelvic health concerns, an internal assessment may be appropriate and can provide useful information about the muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor.
This is always optional and will only be considered where it is relevant to your concerns. We will explain what it involves beforehand, answer any questions you have and obtain your consent.
You remain in control throughout the appointment and can choose not to have an internal assessment at any point.
If an internal assessment isn’t appropriate or you would prefer not to have one, there are other ways we can assess and treat you.
Treatment tailored to you
Treatment might include gentle hands-on osteopathic techniques, work with the muscles and tissues around the pelvis and abdomen, scar therapy, breathing and movement strategies, or exercises to support your recovery.
We also work alongside other healthcare professionals where appropriate and recommend further assessment or referral if your symptoms would benefit from another form of care.
Our aim isn’t simply to treat a particular area — it’s to understand how your symptoms fit into the bigger picture of your health and help you feel more comfortable and confident in your body.
A safe, respectful space
Women’s health appointments can involve talking about things that are personal or difficult to discuss.
We understand that every woman is different. There is no expectation that you should be comfortable with every aspect of an assessment or treatment.
We will explain what we are doing, why we are doing it and give you the opportunity to ask questions throughout your appointment. Your consent matters at every stage.
If you are unsure whether women’s health osteopathy is appropriate for your particular symptoms, please get in touch. We are happy to talk through your concerns and advise whether an appointment with our women’s health specialist would be suitable.
Looking after your whole body
Women’s health doesn’t exist in isolation. Pelvic health, abdominal and pelvic scars, breathing, posture, movement and musculoskeletal symptoms can all interact.
Our approach is therefore centred around you as a whole person, rather than treating one symptom or one body part in isolation.
If something has changed, feels uncomfortable or simply doesn’t feel right, we’re here to help.
Please note that these specialist appointments are designed for conditions that arise from female reproductive anatomy and physiology therefore these appointments are only suitable for patients who are biologically female. General osteopathy appointments remain available for every adult to whom this may not apply. Please get in touch if you are unsure which appointment is most suitable for you.
Pregnancy Loss
Pregnancy loss can affect your body as well as your emotional wellbeing. Physical symptoms may continue after the immediate event has passed, and it can sometimes feel difficult to know where to seek help.
Our women’s health specialist osteopaths can provide supportive, individualised care for physical concerns following pregnancy loss, including pelvic, abdominal, back or musculoskeletal symptoms.
We recognise that everyone’s experience is different. Your appointment will be guided by what you feel comfortable discussing and the support you would like.
