Osteopathy Information

 What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on therapy that focuses on the body’s structure and function. Osteopaths are trained to look at how the muscles, joints, ligaments, and connective tissues are working together, and they interact with your body’s ability to function, and how this may relate to your overall health and wellbeing.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and may involve a variety of techniques such as gentle stretching, massage, or joint mobilisation, with the aim of improving mobility and supporting the body’s ability to move well.

Who We See

At Ashby Osteopaths, we see people of all ages. Some come with everyday aches and pains, while others are looking for support in maintaining flexibility or recovering from the stresses and strains of daily life.

Common reasons people choose to visit an osteopath include:

  • General joint and muscle tension
  • Arthritic pain
  • Digestion problems
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Shoulder / Elbow pain
  • Mechanical neck pain
  • Headache relating to the neck
  • Joint pains
  • Back pain
  • Migraine prevention
  • Minor sports injury
  • Neuralgia
  • Sciatica
  • Postural pain & stiffness linked to work or lifestyle habits
  • Support in staying active and mobile

A Whole-Body Approach

Rather than focusing only on the site of discomfort, osteopaths take a whole-body view. They consider how lifestyle, posture, or everyday activities might contribute to the way you feel. This can be especially useful for people managing the physical demands of work, sport, family life, or simply the changes that come with getting older.

What to expect at your first appointment

History Taking

At your first appointment, we’ll begin by getting to know you. Your osteopath will ask about your symptoms—when they started, how they’ve changed, and how they’re affecting your day-to-day life. We’ll also talk through your general health, medical background, and lifestyle to get a complete picture of what might be contributing to your current issue.

Physical Assessment

After this, we’ll carry out a physical assessment. This involves looking at how you stand and move, and gently examining any areas of tension or discomfort. You may be asked to do a few simple movements to help us understand what your body needs. Please be aware that we might ask you to remove some outer layers of clothing. Wearing something like a vest top and shorts can help you feel more comfortable.

Diagnosis

Once our assessment is complete, your osteopath will explain what they’ve found and outline a treatment approach designed around your individual needs. You’re welcome to ask questions at any stage.

Treatment

Treatment may include a mix of hands-on techniques and supportive therapies, including massage and soft tissue release, stretching and joint mobilisation, muscle energy work, gentle manipulations, cranial techniques, acupuncture, kinesio taping and often a personalised movement or exercise plan.

If we think further medical tests or investigations would be helpful, we’ll refer you back to your GP or suggest the most appropriate next steps.

Other treatments available to you

At Ashby Osteopaths, we take time to understand your concerns and work with you to find the most suitable approach. Our focus is always on safe, evidence-informed care — and if we feel a different type of support would be more appropriate for you, we’ll happily help you access it.
