Osteopathy - FAQs

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to healthcare that focuses on how the body moves and functions. Osteopaths use techniques such as soft tissue massage, stretching, joint mobilisation, and gentle manipulations to help relieve pain, reduce tension, and improve mobility. We consider the whole person — not just the area of pain — to support overall health and recovery.

What can osteopathy help with?

People often come to see us for support with issues such as:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Sciatica or nerve-related pain
  • Headaches linked to muscle or joint tension
  • Joint pain (hips, knees, shoulders, etc.)
  • Minor sports injuries
  • Muscle strain or postural tension
  • Joint pains
  • Pain during or after pregnancy
  • Recovery from injury or surgery
  • Osteopathy may also support people managing chronic pain or looking to maintain mobility as they age

You’re welcome to contact us if you’re not sure, but the chances are, if you’re in pain, we can probably help.

What happens in an osteopathy appointment?

Your first appointment includes a full case history, where we’ll ask about your symptoms, medical background, and lifestyle. We’ll then assess your posture, movement, and areas of tension. We may preform some non-invasive assessments like reflexes and blood pressure checks. Treatment involves hands-on techniques tailored to your needs, often along with advice on posture, exercise, or lifestyle.

If we don’t think treatment is appropriate for you, we will explain why and recommend an alternative for you, or write to your GP (with your consent).

You’re welcome to ask questions at any time — we’ll always explain what we’re doing and why.

What should I wear?

We may ask you to remove some outer layers of clothing so we can assess and treat the area comfortably. You’re welcome to bring shorts, leggings, a vest top, or anything you feel comfortable in. Your comfort and privacy are always respected.

Is osteopathy painful?

Osteopathic treatment is fairly gentle, and most people find it comfortable. Some techniques may feel deep or unfamiliar, but we always work within your tolerance. You may feel some mild soreness for a day or two afterwards, similar to post-exercise achiness — this is normal and usually settles quickly.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the nature and duration of your symptoms. Some people improve after 1-3 sessions; others benefit from a course of treatment, or ongoing care.

After your first appointment, we’ll give you an honest recommendation based on your goals.

Is osteopathy safe?

Yes. Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK. All osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and complete ongoing training to ensure high standards of care. We take a detailed history to ensure treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — you can book directly with an osteopath without a referral. If we feel you need further medical investigation or input from another professional, we’ll always let you know and help guide you.

Will I be given exercises or advice?

Often yes — depending on your condition and goals, we may suggest stretches, strengthening exercises, or ergonomic advice to support recovery and prevent recurrence. These are tailored to your ability and lifestyle.

Can osteopathy help if I’m not in pain?

Absolutely. Many people use osteopathy as part of their general wellbeing routine — for example, to manage stress-related tension, support posture during sedentary work, or stay mobile and active as they get older.

What do I do if I’m unhappy after my appointment?

In the very rare situation where you wish to complain about your appointment or have a concern about anything related to the clinic, please email Sarah or Phoebe at contact@ashbyosteopath.com and give us the opportunity to put things right for you.
